The 35-year-old will have a second crack at life in English football after plundering 28 goals last term following his arrival from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.

But Spanish outlet Don Balon say he could very nearly have signed for La Liga and Champions League holders Real Madrid.

And it is sensationally being claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo was the one who stopped the former Barcelona star signing on at the Bernabeu.
